Saghmosavank, Hovhannavank & Armenian Alphabet Monument

Step into the timeless landscape of Aragatsotn, where medieval monasteries rise above dramatic gorges and the Armenian Alphabet is carved in stone beneath the shadow of Mount Aragats. This half-day tour offers a poetic escape from the city to explore Armenia’s spiritual and linguistic heritage. We begin at Hovhannavank Monastery, dramatically perched above the Kasagh Gorge. Then we follow the cliffside road to its sister site, Saghmosavank, a peaceful sanctuary known for its scriptural legacy. Along the way, we stop at the Alphabet Monument—a tribute to the 36 letters of the Armenian alphabet—where each carved letter invites a photo and a moment of reflection. Optional add-ons and variations may include a visit to Amberd Fortress (a 7th-century citadel on Mount Aragats), a scenic drive to a Mount Aragats viewpoint, a stop at a local honey or cheese farm, or a village bakery tasting for fresh gata and tea.

Hovhannavank Monastery

Dating back to the 4th century, Hovhannavank Monastery sits on the edge of the breathtaking Kasagh Gorge. This atmospheric complex played a major role in early Armenian Christian history and boasts a commanding view of the ravine below. Walk its ancient grounds and admire its finely carved stone crosses and inscriptions.

Saghmosavank Monastery

Just a short ride away, Saghmosavank (Monastery of the Psalms) awaits—another masterpiece overlooking the same deep gorge. Founded in the 13th century, it was a major center of manuscript writing. This peaceful monastery is framed by wild nature and silence, ideal for reflection and photography.

Armenian Alphabet Monument

Unveiled in 2005 to commemorate the 1600th anniversary of the Armenian alphabet, this unique open-air installation features giant stone letters representing each character. It’s a fun, interactive photo stop that celebrates national identity and linguistic pride—plus views of Mount Aragats in the background.

Optional Add-On: Amberd Fortress & Vahramashen Church

Extend your journey into Armenia’s medieval past with a scenic drive to the high-altitude ruins of Amberd Fortress, perched 2,300 meters above sea level. Surrounded by gorges and rivers, it once protected the kingdom from invading armies. Nearby sits the elegant Vahramashen Church, standing strong amid alpine meadows since the 11th century.
Perfect for travelers seeking mountain air, castle ruins, and wide panoramas.

Optional Lunch Stop

You may enjoy a home-style lunch at a local village guesthouse or opt for a picnic with sweeping canyon or mountain views. This can be arranged with the Amberd variation or upon request for the shorter tour.
