While passing through the village of Voghjaberd, architect Rafael Israelyan was struck by the panoramic beauty of Mount Ararat from a nearby hill. In 1957, he designed a simple but elegant arch here, engraved with the final line of Yeghishe Charents’s famous poem. Known today as the Arch of Charents, this spot offers one of the most iconic views of the sacred mountain. We begin the day here soaking in the view, snapping photos, and letting the poetic soul of Armenia awaken.
Built in the first century AD, the Temple of Garni is Armenia’s only surviving pagan structure from the pre-Christian era. Perched dramatically on a cliffside, it overlooks the Azat River Gorge. The temple, dedicated to the sun god Mihr, reflects Greco-Roman architectural styles and invites visitors to imagine Armenia before its Christianization. We’ll walk its ancient steps, hear tales of kings and emperors, and gaze into the surrounding mountains from its colonnaded platform.
In a cozy village home near Garni, you may join a warm-hearted Armenian family for a traditional lavash baking masterclass. You’ll witness the age-old technique of baking paper-thin bread in a toneer oven and even try your hand at stretching the dough. The experience ends with a sampling of fresh lavash, herbs, and village cheese — humble, delicious, and memorable.
Just below Garni Temple lies a natural wonder of tall hexagonal basalt columns that resemble giant organ pipes, nicknamed the Symphony of Stones. We’ll descend into the gorge for a short walk and photo stop, marveling at how geology becomes poetry. The canyon here is a peaceful oasis framed by the whispers of the Azat River and the echo of birds overhead.
Carved directly into a mountainside, Geghard Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its mystical interiors, acoustics, and spiritual power. Founded in the fourth century and expanded in the twelfth to thirteenth centuries, it was once home to the spear said to have pierced Christ’s side. Enter its rock-hewn chapels, hear choral hymns in the ancient acoustics, and light a candle in this timeless sanctuary.
Finish the day at Lake Sevan, one of the largest alpine lakes in the world. The hilltop Sevanavank Monastery offers sweeping views of the water and surrounding mountains. It’s a peaceful and contemplative spot perfect for ending the day with a sense of calm and wonder.
